USM Activities

It is great to be involved on campus. It not only allows you to establish new relationships with people you may have never come in contact with otherwise but it also serves as a "ice breaker". This year is a great year to be involved because it is the schools centiennial celebration year. Many activities will be taking place this year campus wide. In being apart of the student government I have the opportunity to take advantage of these events. The goal is to make each year after this one as great and even better than this one has been to this point.

I learned that the activities council on campus would like to have at least five hundred of of campus student to volunteer for community projects. These projects will range from house repairs to those in need to building new homes all together. There will be community clean up days also. The projects will not only hopefully make Hattiesburg a better place to live and pleasing to the eye but also provide many service hours opportunities for students. http://www.usm.edu/bigevent/

USM Museum of Art

After visiting the museum of art here on campus i quickly realized the time and patients it takes to put even the most simple pieces together. The work ranges from up to date contemporary works to some very historical and educational themes. The museum houses several exhibits composed of three galleries: the C.W.Woods Art Gallery, the W.J.Lok Exhibition Gallery and the newly named Karnes-Sullivan.

Since its establishment the museum has become one of the best attended museums in the state. I also learned during my visit that the museum exhibits work that artist had loaned the university and art work from students and faculty
k. The museum manages two traveling exhibitions: the nationally recognized photography exhibition The Faces of Freedom Summer: the Photographs of Herbert Randall; and Drawing on Katrina: Mississippi Children Respond to the Storm, a collection of 40 framed drawings, paintings and collages by South Mississippi children. http://www.usm.edu/visualarts/museum.php
